We specialise in repairing wheels with hairline cracks on the rear bead. The damage is usually caused by potholes and speed bumps. We see more and more wheels with this damage every year due to road conditions and the popularity of low profile tyres.
The crack is opened out and the alloy area cleaned of paint and grime before welding both sides of the crack to ensure good penetration and strength. Aftrewards, the weld is dressed back to allow the tyre to seal. We prefer to leave the weld proud on inside of the wheel to maximise strength.
Please remember, we will need to clear an area of paint where the damage is for the weld to earth and be successful. The heat from the welding process itself can also affect a small area of the painted finish.
